The mayor of Prince Edward County and a local Catholic school board have waded into a controversy over a priest’s remarks regarding PRIDE week and the LGBTQ community.
A note written by Father Robert Chisolm and published in a recent St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church bulletin stated that parishoners should stay away from PRIDE events because they promote a culture and activities contrary to Christian faith and morals.
That note has brought national attention to the Picton church and sparked peaceful demonstrations.
The mayor of Prince Edward County Steve Ferguson said he was disappointed by the priest’s comments and said the people of the county aspire to foster an inclusive and diverse community. Ferguson said he was proud of the Picton BIA for expanding PRIDE week activities.
Meanwhile, the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board issued a statement saying it welcomes everyone regardless of race, gender, age, stage of development, disability, sexual orientation, gender, identity, class, or religion.
