It’s been a much discussed issue in Prince Edward County but county council is very close to approving regulations for bed and breakfasts and other kinds of short-term accommodation.
Many have expressed concerns about parking, traffic, and noise due to the proliferation of such businesses in what’s become a hot tourism market with few mainstream options such as hotels or motels.
Thursday, council’s Committee of the Whole voted in favour of regulations governing the businesses and council itself will make the final decision soon.
Any short-term accommodation business will need to be licensed by the county with initial and licence renewal fees.
There would be regular inspections.
There are detailed fire and building code regulations, specific areas that they would be acceptable in, insurance regulations, and specific property standards.
The municipality would levy fines for bylaw infractions with penalties ranging from $500 to $1,000 and higher for repeat infractions.
