Suddenly, a lot of people are talking about single use plastics and how bad they are for the environment.
Today, Prince Edward County council’s Committee of the Whole heard two delegations offering information and advice on how single use plastics, like water bottles, cutlery and straws, should be eliminated.
One organization is Plastic Free PEC. It has already purchased a mobile water station for use at public events to lessen the use of water bottles.
The committee recommended that council designate Plastic Free PEC as a worthwhile community initiative so it can apply for non-profit status to help find financial support.
County Mayor Steve Ferguson said the county should be a shining example of people cleaning up their environment.
Meanwhile, Suzanne O’Connor spoke about ways to get businesses involved in lessening the use of plastics by offering signage and other publicity to them if they are found to be operating in an environmentally friendly manner.
Prince Edward County is in the process of creating a special committee to deal with environmental issues.
