The Wellington Dukes proposal to build a gym/training facility in the Rotary Hall in the Wellington District Community Centre is drawing opposition.
At a council Committee of the Whole meeting Thursday, Susan Mathieu of the Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre said the organization expects to lose members and much needed revenue if the Dukes open up a competing facility.
Mathieu added that the fitness centre had a special agreement for Dukes players to use its facilities but that only one player took advantage of it.
Also, the president of the Wellington Rotary Club, after which the Rotary Hall is named, said the hall should remain a community space open for events.
Randy Uens of the Wellington Dukes said that the fitness centre in Picton didn’t have enough of the proper equipment for player training and suggested they were open to further discussions with the fitness centre.
He added he was surprised the plan was getting so much opposition and that the training centre would help the Dukes remain a viable entity in the county.
A staff report on the Dukes proposal is coming to council in the near future.
