Northumberland County council is going to end their use of Roundup for vegetation control along county roads.
Council decided on Friday they would have staff acquire the specialized equipment and staff necessary to manage this year’s vegetation control processes along county road guide rails by mechanical means.
Acting County Warden Bob Crate says it is important that they demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship.
The County already achieved the majority of their vegetation control through mowing and other forms of preventative maintenance. Roundup was applied in the past on a limited basis for weed control purposes where toxic weeds pose health risks to staff and members of the public.
Staff will return to council in the fall with a report outlining more extensive options for vegetation control in future years.
