The proposal to move a methadone clinic from Belleville’s Front Street location to South Church Street is being recommended to city council.
The proposal met with heavy objections at the planning committee meeting last month, including a petition with nearly 300 signatures.
Monday night, the committee agreed with a staff report which indicates locating the clinic at the 125 South Church Street site aligns with the Official Plan’s land use policy.
The staff report indicates there were more police calls to city hall in four years than to the Front Street clinic.
Committee Chair Councillor Paul Carr comments on people’s concerns.
The committee voted to recommend approval to city council.
If council approves the project, better lighting and cleanliness concerns will be addressed with garbage receptacles.
The zoning will be consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Canadian Charter of Rights.
