The Ontario NDP party is no fan of the Ford government’s proposals to cut spending.
Speaking on a fact finding tour of Quinte region health care providers today (Thursday) the NDP’s Deputy Leader John Vanthof says cutting back investment in public health is a bad idea.
Vanthof says the work done by health units, such as water testing and food and restaurant inspections keeps people out of hospitals but is easy to cut back because people don’t notice the work as much as they do the work done in hospitals.
The NDP says the PC government has thrown almost the entire Ontario public service into chaos by making decisions and announcing cuts without taking the time to talk to the people involved in actually providing services.
The Walkerton tragedy almost 20 years ago which many blamed on spending cutbacks by Mike Harris’ conservatives was held up as an example of bad decision making.
Meanwhile, Vanthof says the NDP believe the province doesn’t so much have a spending problem but an income problem as the PCs have cut sources of revenue such as the cap and trade program while providing tax breaks to wealthy residents.
