Residents and motorists in Madoc will notice some delays and a strong smell of gas this afternoon.
A natural gas main line was severed earlier this afternoon in the area of Durham Street and St. Lawrence Street East.
There is construction taking place in the area.
Many buildings have been evacuated and a number of downtown blocks are closed.
People are asked to avoid the area while the fire department and police wait for the gas company to arrive.
