Wellington Dukes Vice President of Hockey and Business Operations called the idea a win-win and wants to see a gym at the Wellington and District Community Centre.
Randy Uens made a presentation on Thursday afternoon at Shire Hall asking council for their support in converting the Rotary Room into a gym facility.
He told council the upfront costs ($60,000) to get the gym started would be on the Wellington Dukes and he assured council they would continue to see revenues to the municipality at a minimum of $10,000.
Mayor Steve Ferguson says he thinks it’s a great idea.
Uens says the ownership group of the team wants to build something sustainable and he believes this is the way to go.
He told council the Wellington Dukes have the smallest Jr. A franchise by population and they need to have something that will attract players to the team, with this being one of those key features.
The facility would allow for community use through a membership at a cost of between $30 and $45 a month.
According to the report provided to council, Dukes will assume responsibility for the gym and the costs associated with running the facility and the canteen, which the Dukes will have control of.
The Dukes would also pay 10% of the net proceeds at the end of the fiscal year according to Uens.
The municipality would be asked to provide water, hydro and heat to the the gym at no charge to the facility.
Council has asked staff for a report on the feasibility of the gym proposal to come forward at a later date.
