The Belleville Police Service responded to 74 calls between May 9, 2019 at 5 a.m. and May 10, 2019 at 5 a.m.
Smoke
On May 10, 2019, at approximately 1:18 a.m., police were called to an east end location regarding smoke coming from an apartment. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that smoke was present in the home as a result of hot dogs having been left on the stove. Luckily, police and fire intervened, and fans were utilized to ventilate the residence to ensure the safety of the occupant.
Ongoing scams
Belleville Police officers have been receiving an increased amount of complaints regarding a scam. The unknown perpetrators utilize online sites to contact citizens attempting to sell personal items. They send a fake money order to the person for an amount greater than the asking price. Once received, they asked the unsuspecting victim to deposit the fraudulent money order and send back the difference. This leaves the victim with a cheque that eventually bounces and at a loss of money. Belleville Police are urging the community to be vigilant when dealing with persons over the phone or internet and not to provide any personal information over the phone or the internet.
