The Belleville Police Service responded to 79 calls between May 8, 2019 at 5 a.m. and May 9, 2019 at 5 a.m.
Attempted break and enters
On May 8, 2019 at 8:49 a.m. police responded to an attempted break-in at an east end residence. A home owner advised police that there had been an attempted entry to the home through a window sometime in the last few days. The investigation is continuing, and police are asking anyone with information about this to contact Cst. On May 8, 2019 at 5:30 p.m., police received a second call of break-in at a home on the west side of the city. The complainant notified police of a broken window at the rear of the residence. It was unknown at the time if entry had been gained, as nothing appeared suspicious with the exception of the damage to the window. The investigation is continuing. Theft
On May 8, 2019 at 9:51 a.m., police responded to a theft complaint in the east end of the city. An investigation revealed that between 8:30 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. the evening prior, a backpack containing a wallet, jewellery, a cell phone, and gift cards was stolen. Police continue to investigate the matter. Anyone with information about this is asked to contact investigating officer Cst. Traffic enforcement
On May 8, 2019 at 1:33 p.m., the Traffic Safety Unit stopped a motorist in the Pinnacle Street and Dundas Street East area. The investigation revealed the motorist was driving with expired licence plates and that the vehicle was unsafe for driving. Police seized the licence plates and the vehicle was towed from the location. An 18-year-old man has a court date in the Provincial Offences Court next month.
Motor vehicle collisions
City police responded to five motor vehicle collisions throughout the previous 24-hour period. Most were for minor property damage only. At 1:59 p.m. on May 8, 2019, a two-car motor vehicle collision occurred in the Yeomans Street and Moira Street West area. Minor damage and injuries were reported. One driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario and issued an offence notice for “failing to yield to traffic on a through highway.”
Pursuit results in charges
On May 8, 2019 at 4:09 p.m., police attempted to arrest a 33-year-old city man on an outstanding arrest warrant for the offence of breach of probation. The man was located in the area of Brown Street. The man engaged in a pursuit with police and was successfully stopped a short distance away. Further investigation resulted in charges of flight from police, driving while under suspension, driving a motor vehicle with no currently validated permit, and four counts of theft – under $5000 (stemming from a shoplifting incident four days prior). He was held in custody to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice for a show-cause hearing on May 9, 2019.
Bail violations results in arrest
On May 8, 2019 at 4:25 p.m., police were alerted to a man wanted for breaching his bail conditions. Police attended to the area of Victoria Avenue and William Street and arrested the man, taking him into custody. The 40-year-old man from Yarker, Ontario is facing charges of failing to comply with probation, failing to comply with a recognizance and possession of a controlled substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The man has been held in custody pending a show-cause hearing set for May 9, 2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice.
Breach of the peace
On May 8, 2019 at 5:12 p.m,. police responded to a call of an assault in the far east end of the city. A female complainant notified police of a male who was at her location, threatening, and trying to pick a fight with her son. An investigation revealed there was no such fight, but a bit of a disturbance being caused by the suspected male. Police completed this investigation and arrested a 38-year-old city man for breaching the peace. He was taken into custody and held for several hours until it was satisfied that the breaching was no longer going to be an issue. The man was released from police custody unconditionally, without charge(s).
Other assistance
Police attended to many other calls for assistance within the previous 24-hour period ending May 9, at 5 a.m. These occurrences included calls for suspicious persons and vehicles, family and neighbour disputes, unwanted persons, assisting ambulance, trouble with youth calls, alarms, harassment, and calls to assist under the Trespass to Property Act. All were investigated and completed without further incident.
