Cue the parade. The Napanee Raiders are the Ontario Junior “C” Hockey champions.
Greg Powles scored what proved to be the game, series and championship winning goal at 12:19 of the second period as Napanee defeated Grimsby 3-1 to clinch the Clarence “Tubby” Schmaltz Cup in five games.
Reid Humphrey and Evan Foley rounded out the scoring as the Raiders rounded out a dominating post season winning 20 of 21 games. The Raiders outshot the Peach Kings 36-23 with 1300 fans crammed into the Strathcona Paper Centre.
It’s the second “Schmaltz” Cup for Napanee. They last won it in 1993. It is only the third time since the Cup was first awarded in 1938 that a local team has won it. The Picton Pirates did it in 2013.
