SENT BY OPP
On Sunday, April 28, 2019, shortly after 8:00 p.m., members of the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an overdue boater.
A 65-year-old man had been in his canoe on Opinicon Lake and had failed to return to his home on Davis Lock Road.
Members of the Leeds and Frontenac OPP Detachment Marine Units, as well as the OPP Snowmobile, All Terrain Vehicle and Vessel Enforcement Unit (SAVE) attended to assist front line officers in the search. A military aircraft was also dispatched by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at CFB Trenton.
OPP officers located the man’s body in the water at about 3:00 a.m. on April 29, 2019.
The victim has been identified as James Robert Armour of South Crosby Township, Ontario. He was an experienced canoer and was wearing a personal flotation device.
The cause of death has not been confirmed and a postmortem examination will be conducted at Kingston General Hospital.
The OPP reminds boaters that it is especially important during cold water seasons to wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), which can make unexpected mishaps survivable. Hypothermia is a particularly significant risk right now.
