A petition to urge Belleville City Council to bring ride-sharing service Uber to town is gaining traction.
The online petition cites long wait times and lack of service from local cab companies as the main reason for needing another point-to-point transportation service in the area and has more than 500 signatures, halfway to its goal.
Former Belleville Councillor Egerton Boyce was on the Lorne Brooker Show on Thursday morning and says while Uber is known for its work in bigger cities, the company has seen a lot of success in some smaller centres like Innisfil as well.
Former Quinte West Mayor John Williams also called in to comment and says it’s not just about the residents, but the visitors and tourists as well.
He says that having the service would help put the Quinte region on par with other tourist destinations around the province.
And while the petition seems to be gaining steam, not everyone is in favour of Uber coming to town.
One driver for a local cab company called in and says he doesn’t see the need.
Petition organizer Rob Mason is trying to get 1,000 signatures before presenting it to council and if you’re interested, you can sign the petition by clicking here.
