The Integrity Commissioner for Hastings County appeared before council on Thursday to give a refresher on the rules surrounding the councillors’ conduct.
Integrity Commissioner John Ewart reminded council the mandatory rules serve as as check and balance against new powers given to municipal government.
He noted that under the code of conduct a councillor could be reprimanded and suspended up to 90 days.
Under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act the suspension could last seven years.
Ewart told Quinte News his advice for council members is read the agenda, know what’s coming up and don’t be caught not knowing what is on the agenda.
Ewart noted that the complainant must come to him within 42 days of first knowing the breach occurred and he (Ewart) must complete his enquiry within 180 days.
His sources are confidential in an investigation, he will assess if there has been a breach and report to council.
