A new federal funding model could help protected land across Canada, and right here in the region.
Earlier this week, the feds announced they will support groups that are raising money for wetlands, protected wildlife sanctuaries, and nature areas.
For every $2 raised by a group, the government will grant $1.
Mark Stabb is the Regional Program Director for the Nature Conservancy of Canada and says the funding model will help ensure that landscapes are protected across the county.
Stabb says the government is looking to get 17 percent of Canadian land protected, which is an international commitment.
There are three major areas protected by the NCC in our area: The Napanee Plain Alvar Nature Reserve, the southern shores of Prince Edward County around Ostrander Point, and a few thousand acres of the Rice Lake Plains.
