Lower Trent Conservation has issued a flood watch for Rice Lake and the Trent River from Hastings to Trenton ahead of this weekend’s rainfall.
Staff at the conservation authority say significant precipitation starting today through the weekend is anticipated to bring 30-50mm of rain to the Lower Trent watershed region and significant snowmelt from the northern portion of the Trent River basin has already increased the water levels and flows on the Trent River.
Residents living along the Trent River from the Village of Hastings to Trenton should anticipate further increases in water levels and flows for at least the next week. Furthermore, residents should ensure their sump pumps are working and secure personal property (e.g., boats, docks, etc.) along the river banks.
Sand and sandbags are available at 177 North Murray St., Trenton Ward and 97 Wolfe Street, Frankford Ward. Residents are advised to bring their own shovels.
“The City will continue to be in close contact with the agencies involved to monitor the water levels over the next week,” states Quinte West Mayor, Jim Harrison. “We will provide updates to the public as new information becomes available.”
Rain forecasts for the upcoming weekend may have Belleville residents concerned with water levels around their homes. Worried individuals are encouraged to contact the City of Belleville Fire Communications dispatch number at 613-962-2010 and provide their name, phone number and the residential property of concern. Belleville Fire & Rescue will send an Assessor to determine the needs of the property.
“There are sandbags and sand ready for deployment,” assured Fire Chief Mark MacDonald. “As with previous flood events, we are monitoring the water levels closely and are aware of which properties are impacted first.”
