Brighton council is close to having its budget set for this year.
Yesterday (Wednesday) council voted to have staff create a budget bylaw that council is expected to vote on early next month.
As it stands, the levy increase, including local, education and county taxes, would increase almost 3.5%.
That would work out to about $125 a year more on a house worth $300,000.
Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander is happy that council decided to up spending on roadwork to $2 million this year but that’s still a little short of the $2.5 million required each year.
The roadwork spending is almost split evenly between rural and urban Brighton. Any upgrades on urban roads will include sidewalks and upgrades on the rural roads will come with extensive brushing and ditching along the sides.
Mayor Ostrander is also happy that the budget would allow the purchase of a new grader and an extra sidewalk plow. Also, the budget provides money to finish the library upgrades and expansion.
The municipal part of the budget as presented totals just over $8 million.
