The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board wants the Minister of Education to take another look at the proposed autism funding supports in place in school systems.
Board of Trustees Chair, Shannon Binder, says they are very concerned about the proposed changes in funding supports for children with autism.
The letter, which was sent to Lisa Thompson, the Minister of Education, also states the proposed increase in average class size in secondary schools to 28:1 is a significant concern to the board.
Binder says the Board of Trustees hopes the government re-evaluates what the proposed changes are.
The letter states “It is clear that teaching positions will be affected and that it will impact the range of programming at secondary schools.”
It continues on to say that the school board is a mix of suburban and rural areas with small schools and maintaining a range of programming and an adequate number of staff in secondary schools are already challenges.
The board is concerned about student safety, fewer options for students and a negative impact on student achievement and well-being.
The letter also mentions that e-learning is not appropriate for all students as many in the area of the school board struggle to access the internet.
The government has extended consultations until May 31, 2019.
