The City of Quinte West is hoping to make it easier for people to find a place to live in the municipality.
The Planning Advisory Committee met on Thursday night to discuss an Official Plan Amendment for second dwelling units.
The municipality wants to allow second dwelling units more broadly than allowed under current policies. The current Official Plan states secondary units are not allowed in ancillary buildings or in areas without municipal water and sewer services.
Under the amended policy, secondary dwelling units would be allowed, where permitted, in a detached, semi-detached, duplex, townhouse dwelling or in an accessory building.
Other recommendations include an additional parking space required for the second dwelling unit, frontage onto a municipal road that is maintained year round and the second dwelling must not be larger than the primary dwelling unit.
The committee approved the recommendation.
Mayor Jim Harrison says this is not new to the municipality.
He says the second dwelling units are subject to building code approval as well for safety reasons.
The motion still has to be rubber stamped by council before it becomes official.
