Lower Trent Conservation has issued a Flood Outlook Statement for the Lower Trent watershed region (area stretching from Grafton to Quinte West and from Lake Ontario to Rice Lake).
Stream flows and levels across the Lower Trent Conservation watershed region are currently slightly elevated from recent rainfall and snow melt.
Above freezing temperatures are forecast for the next week with above zero temperatures predicted overnight until Friday night. Runoff from rain and further snowmelt may result in the potential for flooding to occur. Ice break-up on local waterways could result in ice jamming and cause further flooding concerns.
Lower Trent Conservation will continue to monitor conditions but if residents observe sudden increases in water levels or the formation of ice jams, they should call the Lower Trent Conservation office.
Strong, continuous, southerly winds across Lake Ontario are expected Wednesday through Friday and may cause ice shove onto shorelines.
Under these mild conditions, all local rivers, streams, and lakes should be considered extremely dangerous. Ice cover will become unstable and hazardous, and should be considered unsafe. Parents and caregivers are urged to keep children and pets away from all waterways. Areas around water control structures should be avoided at all times.
