A report on food security in the Quinte area shows low wages are the main problem.
Statistics presented to the Hastings Prince Edward Board of Health on Wednesday show 10% of people living in the area may be struggling to afford food.
Health promoter Jessica Bahari said that while rent has jumped 11% over the past two years, income increased only 2.6%.
Bahari’s report to the board indicated poverty and food insecurity are serious public health problems.
Medical Officer of Health Dr.Piotr Oglaza noted the health unit can only refer the matter to decision makers who have the role of allocating more resources.
Prince Edward County Councillor Andreas Bolik pointed out that the county had put some initiatives in its budget to combat food insecurity.
