Those rumours are true Belleville – Costco is coming to town.
Consultants were on hand at Belleville’s Planning Committee meeting Monday to confirm the retail giant is coming as part of a major shopping centre development being proposed for land on Bell Boulevard, west of the Towne Place Suites by Marriott and the Shoreline Casino.
The proposal presented to the committee calls for a complex featuring 15 commercial buildings, which would include a large retail outlet, food store, fitness centre and gas station on a site stretching all the way from Bell Boulevard to Highway 401.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk tells Quinte News “it’s a huge step for the city”
The application to the city reports on a long list of issues, such as the retail market impact. Figures presented by the consultant indicate the development could create up to 848 full-time jobs. It states the city could benefit from $2.1 million in one time fees and $1.3 million a year in property tax revenue.
Mayor Panciuk pointed to the need for more housing as the city develops in this way.
When Mike Keene of Fotenn Consultants, representing Jenland Properties, was asked if he could release the name of the anchor tenant he said, “I was looking to my colleagues if I could release that and I’ll caveat that by saying right now Jenland Properties is the owner and it has to transition through to a number of owners, but if one has read our reports in detail you’ll see the tenants that we’re testing for and the tenant that we’re testing for is Costco.”
The rezoning application by Jenland Properties is to allow for further uses on the 14.6 hectare parcel of land.
Panciiuk says Costco is expected to open in 2020.
