The 23rd annual Violence Awareness Random Acts of Kindness week began tonight at the Quinte Mall in Belleville.
Hundreds of people, including local elementary and secondary school students accompanied by family, joined Mayor Mitch Panciuk, city councillors, co-chair of the Violence Awareness Random Acts of Kindness program Chris MacDonald and many more in celebration.
The campaign celebrates passing kindness on to one another. The campaign began in 1997 as a remembrance of Belleville native Mark Fyke who was murdered in Florida and continues to support all of those affected by violence.
Tonight, the St. Joseph’s Catholic School choir performed a song about making a difference in the world.
Following the choir performance was an award ceremony recognizing students from local schools for their random acts of kindness. Other awards were given out to students who won colouring and poster-making contests.
Candles for the vigil were given out along with t-shirts and snacks as part of the celebration.
MacDonald was very pleased with the turnout.
Mayor Panciuk also recognized what this campaign means to our community.
Violence Awareness Random Acts of Kindness week will continue through March 10.
