As the number of bus riders tops the million mark, Belleville is focusing some attention on increased service to those riders.
There are currently only two public washrooms available to serve transit riders and those attending downtown events such as at the market, parades or festivals.
This week city council approved spending $350,000 to provide washrooms with direct outside access, improvements to driver washroom and kitchen facilities.
There will also be an upgrade to high volume bus stops with modern shelters. These will be equipped with solar powered LED lighting as well as bench seats.
This will cost $80,000.
Also this year, the city will spend nearly $200,000 on a marquee sign at Pinnacle Playhouse and an update of the fire alarm system in the theatre.
