City of Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk and city councillors Kelly McCaw, Sean Kelly and Garnet Thompson, met with board members of Grace Inn Shelter at City Hall today (Thursday) to gain a clearer understanding of the shelter’s construction progress and an anticipated opening date.
“Today we met with the Grace Inn board members and discussed steps we can take to provide a solution for the homeless within our community during the cold,” said Mayor Mitch Panciuk.
“We are trying to gain a better understanding as to when the Grace Inn Shelter will be completed and what our next steps will be in providing a warm and safe overnight place for the homeless to go for the remainder of the winter,” he adds.
Grace Inn will be located at 315 Church Street, the site of the former Irish Hall.
It is expected to have 21 beds: 16 for men and five for women. It will be open every day of the year.
The goal is to offer amenities which will give those staying a sense of dignity and security. These amenities include semi-private bedrooms, lockers to keep belongings safe overnight, and access to shower and laundry facilities.
