Getting a better voter’s list
Belleville has thrown its weight behind a move to have a new system of voters list for municipal elections.
Councillor Garnet Thompson told city council Monday night many people didn’t get on the voter list at the last election and “there needs to be a more accurate list.”
Mayor Mitch Panciuk noted the list is generated by MPAC (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation) and it does “the worst job.”
Council voted to support a move to have a provincial government-municipal working group to find ways to create and maintain the voter list for municipal elections.
Council salaries
Belleville council gave itself a raise at its meeting yesterday.
The increases to the Mayor’s and councillor’s salaries will not lead to an increase in their take home pay because the federal government has removed a provision that allowed one third of council’s salaries to be tax free.
All of the salary is now taxed by the federal government so the raise ensures the new council receives the same amount of take home pay as the previous one did but not more.
