Belleville has bought the former Cabaret on the riverfront across from city hall.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk made the announcement at city council Monday night.
The city paid $675,000 for the property that was once the Cabaret.
The original asking price was $1.5 million.
Panciuk told Quinte News it’s not clear yet what will be done at that location.
He says many people could not understand having “that kind of business (the strip club) in the downtown, especially after investing in the revitalization.”
Panciuk said, “I’m really pleased were able to come to terms with the Syd Spiegel family (the former owners) and purchase this property. I give them credit for the fact that they wanted to make this deal and they wanted to sell it to the city so that we can invest in our community… we’re looking forward to finalizing the agreement, there’s a couple of things to the close but we don’t anticipate any issues.”
The license for a second strip club in the city will go to the Spiegel property on Bell Boulevard.
The mayor expects demolition to begin in a few months and it could cost about $100,000.
The area will be used as a parking lot until a decision is made about its future use.
