Belleville is considering increasing the amount of tax credit it gives to low income seniors and disabled people.
Right now, the low income seniors and disabled people receive a $400 dollar tax credit, costing the city about $120,000.
At the last council meeting, Mayor Mitch Panciuk suggested doubling that to reach $800 over the next few years.
Panciuk spoke to Quinte News this week.
Panciuk says it’s in the city’s best interest to keep people in their homes.
He points out, “The city doesn’t have available rental accommodation. We don’t have long term care facilities with available space. This helps people stay in their homes which is the intended benefit and we’re hoping to be able to do even more of that going forward. “
The issue will be considered at the operating budget discussions in April.
