A tax change mandated by the federal government is causing discussion at municipal council meetings everywhere and Monday Belleville council will make a decision.
Previously, one third of a mayor’s or councillor’s remuneration was not taxed by the federal government but now it will be.
Basically, if council doesn’t give itself a raise, all members will take home less cash.
A staff report shows that for the mayor to take home the same amount of money this year as last, there would have to be $13,390 added to the current almost $84,000 salary.
For council the amount of the raise would work out to be another $3,001 added to the current $30,851.
The overall council remuneration budget would increase just over 10% if the raises were approved.
Last summer Quinte West council voted to increase its salaries to keep their net pay the same as in the past.
