Two researchers on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory are receiving significant grants from the Federal Government.
MP Mike Bossio announced the grants Tuesday, which total more than $88,000.
$50,000 will go to Keith Williams at the First Nations Technical Institute to study agriculture, food security and sustainability, focusing on decolonization, Indigenous knowledge, elders and knowledge keepers.
Meanwhile, Callie Hill at the territory’s Language and Culture Centre will get just over $38,000 to study linguistics, language and education, focusing on elder gatherings, Indigenous language revitalization and Indigenous research methodology.
Bossio says the grants show the federal commitment to renewing its relationship with Indigenous peoples and that recognizing Indigenous rights and traditional knowledge helps to close the gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
