The Belleville Police Service responded to 81 calls between January 9, 2019 at 5 a.m. and January 10, 2019 at 5 a.m.
Report of choking leads to arrest
On January 9, 2019 at 7:22 a.m. police were called to a residence in the east end of the city after a woman reported being assaulted by her brother. The man was gone upon police arrival, but returned one hour later. The woman, who claimed the man had choked her, suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries. The investigation concluded with a 41-year-old city man getting arrested and charged with “assault causing bodily harm.” He was taken into custody and remanded at the Ontario Court of Justice to a court date later this week. The name of the man is not being released in order to protect the identity of the victim.
Break enter and theft while resident sleeps
On January 9, 2019 at 8:30 a.m., police were called to a residence in the downtown core for a report of a break, enter and theft. The investigation revealed that an unknown suspect entered the residence of the victim who was sleeping at the time by removing a rear bedroom window. The investigation further revealed a boot print left behind by the suspect on a piece of material within the residence. The incident occurred between 11 p.m. on January 8 and 8 a.m. on January 9. A DVD player was stolen. Forensic Identification Officers were called in to assist in the matter and collect evidence. An investigation is continuing. Other break and enters
On January 9, 2019 at 4:21 p.m., police attended to a second break-in call in the Pine Street area. The complainant advised police that her daughter arrived home from school and noticed the home had been broken into. An investigation revealed this occurred sometime between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. An X-Box gaming item and a computer were stolen. On January 9, 2019 at 4:55 p.m. police responded to a residence in the Grier Street area for a report of an entry made into a storage unit. An investigation revealed that a security light was purposely disabled. Entry was then made into the unit. It appeared the unknown suspect rummaged through the unit. No property was reported to be missing, but police did note that the suspect left behind a used needle and syringe. This material was secured and safely disposed of by police. Arrested on warrant
On January 9, 2019 at 10:28 a.m. police attended to the Ontario Court of Justice where a man was wanted by way of an arrest warrant for “failing to comply with a probation order”. The warrant was executed and 35-year-old city resident Christopher Russell Gunn was taken into custody. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Motor vehicle collision charge
On January 9, 2019 at 3:58 p.m. police attended to a motor vehicle collision in the area of North Front Street and King George Square. An investigation revealed the mishap was between a passenger car and a tow truck. Nobody was injured. Another tow truck was called to assist with the involved car. A 58-year-old Belleville woman was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with the offence of “following too closely.” Anyone who may have witnessed this is asked to please contact investigating officer Cst. Theft from baby stroller
On January 9, 2019 at 7:21 p.m. police responded to a report of a theft from a local Salvation Army store in the downtown. A female reported to police that a set of keys, a coat, and a child’s blanket were stolen from her baby stroller outside the location. The investigation is continuing. Other assistance calls
Belleville, Ontario – City police attended a host of other calls for assistance within the previous 24-hour period. These included neighbour disputes, family disputes, other minor domestic disputes, traffic complaints, complaints of suspicious people and vehicles, harassment occurrences, landlord – tenant problems, and a total of fourteen 911call/911 hang-ups. All, with the exception of two, were checked and cleared by officers and police dispatchers on return calls and officers attending the locations. In one instance, an unwanted male at a residence was the cause of the call. The male agreed to leave the residence after speaking with police.
A second call in the north end of the city was the result of a mother calling for her 29-year-old son who had been under the influence of alcohol and was feigning seizures. The male was accusing his parents of stealing his wallet, and was willing to commit to these actions in order to secure police presence. Once his deception was discovered, he was instructed to stay inside for the night and go to bed. The man was also criminally cautioned with the offence of “public mischief.” Police received no further calls back to the residence.
