Via Rail has submitted a proposal to the federal government, which could see a massive overhaul to not only scheduling, but the creation of new rail lines.
Officials with the rail line expect a decision from the government this year on whether or not a high frequency rail line will be built, running from Peterborough to Ottawa.
Existing trails and rights of way will be used for the construction of the proposed line.
It would go right through the Quinte region, from Havelock past Tweed to Kaladar, with proximity to Highway 7.
Miriam Diaby with Via Rail says the line would be for primarily for passenger service only.
Currently, because of the amount of freight and passenger service on the main line along the 401, it can get quite cluttered and Diaby says the new line would alleviate the congestion.
Those in Belleville wanting to go to Toronto or Montreal would still be able to use the current line, and Diaby says a better schedule would also be presented.
The entire project is proposed around $4 billion.
