Preliminary discussions have begun on the idea of an Earth Science Centre in North Hastings.
The idea of such a centre, at a cost of about $16 million, was first proposed by Professor Nick Eyles of the University of Toronto years ago.
Hastings County Economic Development Officer Andrew Redden says it’s more than just gems and recreational geology.
There are more mineral specimens per capita in the Bancroft region than elsewhere and this could be shown in such a centre.
Redden tells Quinte News meetings were held recently with community organizations and the idea, which is in very preliminary consideration, would have to have a formal community group to develop it.
He says it would be a non-profit charitable group, possibly working with the Hastings County Stewardship group or the Bancroft Stewardship group.
