The fire chief in Quinte West is praising the teamwork of his crews, Hastings-Quinte EMS and ski patrol staff at Batawa Ski Hill, after a gruesome injury this morning.
John Whelan tells Quinte News a 19-year-old man was skiing at the hill just before 11 a.m. when he fell off the trail and a piece of exposed rebar went through his leg.
Whelan says firefighters used the jaws of life to cut the rebar, which had penetrated about six or eight inches through the man’s leg and he was transported to Belleville General Hospital awake and alert.
Whelan says the man may be transported further to Kingston General and again noted the professionalism of the ski patrol, paramedics and firefighters who responded to the incident.
