New penalties are now in place for those caught distracted driving around Quinte and Ontario.
Belleville Police Sergeant Brad Stitt says the first offence could be up to one thousand dollars, demerit points, and a three-day licence suspension.
Stitt says it is all about situation awareness.
Distracted driving is the leading cause of death on Ontario roads.
