The Belleville Senators overcame two three-goal deficits to beat the Rochester Americans 5-4 Wednesday night.
Belleville had goals from Max McCormick, Rudolfs Balcers, Aaron Luchuk, Stuart Percy and Paul Carey while Marcus Hogberg made two saves before being pulled in favour of Filip Gustavsson who turned aside 18 shots. Rochester’s goals came from Victor Olofsson (2), Eric Cornel and CJ Smith while Scott Wedgewood made 33 saves.
Trailing 4-3 entering the third, the Senators stunned the Americans with two goals in 58 seconds inside the final three minutes of the game. Percy tied the game at 4-4 as he buried a rebound after Andrew Sturtz’s initial shot had been saved at 17:17 before Carey tallied the game-winner 58 seconds later to give the Senators the two points.
It was a disastrous start for the Senators who fell behind 3-0 early and spelled the end of the night for Hogberg on five shots. Olofsson opened the scoring at 4:32 as he was left all alone down low to bury his third of the year before Cornel made it 2-0 at 6:06 on the power play.
The Amerks lead was 3-0 through CJ Smith as he scored from an acute angle to end Hogberg’s night at 11:46 of the first.
Belleville managed to get on the board by the end of the period through a returning McCormick who redirected Adam Tambellini’s point shot past Wedgewood at 14:22 on the power play.
The Amerks restored its three goal advantage only 1:24 into the second as Olofsson buried a rebound after a Gustavsson kick save landed in his lap but Belleville replied through Balcers’ 11th of the year on the power play as he buried Christian Wolanin’s centering pass from the slot.
Belleville got within a goal as Luchuk notched his first career AHL goal at 13:52 as on a partial breakaway as he slid the puck five-hole to beat Wedgewood.
Percy recorded his 100th career AHL assist in the win.
