A Colborne woman has been given a lifetime ban on dog ownership after pleading guilty to charges of permitting animals to be in distress.
Fifty-eight-year-old Karen Nixon made the plea Monday in Cobourg, after an investigation in March into the welfare of 57 golden retriever-type dogs and four cats that were found in poor health and living in unsanitary conditions.
After failing to get up to standards, the animals were removed in June and were re-homed through OSPCA affiliates.
OSPCA Senior Inspector Bonnie Bishop says Nixon “found herself in a position where she had more animals than she could properly care for”.
