Mayors from across the Quinte Region held a discussion about infrastructure with federal officials on Thursday.
As part of his tour of the region, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure Marco Mendicino, hosted the round table talk in Belleville, to outline the Liberal Government plan to invest $180 billion in infrastructure over the next 10 years.
Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk says there wasn’t a lot of information shared about how to immediately access cash, but the message seemed to be to have municipalities push the province to cooperate on a three-tiered system of funding.
Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison agreed that all three levels of government will need to work together for the federal plan to work.
New Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson says he has to catch up on what applications the municipality has in the pipeline and how PEC and the province are working together, but says the information gathered during the meeting will help to address some major concerns.
Mendicino added that it’s important for the government to “deliver for rural and northern communities” and credited area MPs Neil Ellis and Mike Bossio for advocating to make sure funds were available for those types of communities.
