Outgoing Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quaiff teared up as he watched those in council chambers rise to give him a standing ovation as his term as mayor officially came to an end.
Quaiff says to be respected by his colleagues like that was overwhelming.
At the start of the meeting, Quaiff was presented with a framed photo with a gavel by councillors Barry Turpin and Jim Dunlop, signed by all the councillors.
Quaiff says it was bittersweet to call the meeting to an end as he really loved being mayor.
Mayor elect Steve Ferguson noted there are 100.7 cumulative years of municipal political experience departing council chambers.
Outgoing council members include: Kevin Gale (21 years), Barry Turpin (15 years), Dianne O’Brien (12 years), Quaiff (11.7 years), Jim Dunlop (11 years), Gordon Fox (10 years), councillors Steve Graham, Lenny Epstein, Treat Hull, Dave Harrison and Roy Pennell (four years).
Each councillor had the chance to speak and say a few words before the meeting was adjourned for the final time with this council.
Councillors were then presented with a token of appreciation from staff.
