Quinte West is faced with a shortage of rental units but is planning for a change that could help.
Director of Planning and Development Brian Jardine says the availability of rental units is below 3%, and this is partly because of the migration of people from the Toronto area.
He acknowledges it’s a growing issue and says there are several tools the municipality can use to bolster higher density development, “work with developers to encourage development that lends itself to rental as opposed to purchase.”
Quinte West already has a “second unit” policy in urban areas but this could expand soon, further than the present Trenton and Frankford.
Jardine tells Quinte News there are other opportunities for incentive programs and staff will await direction from the new council.
