On October 18, 2018, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police, Prince Edward Detachment Crime Unit investigated allegations that a female had been unknowingly drugged.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, search warrants were obtained and evidence was seized including computers and cellphones. Thomas McDowell, a 64-year-old male residing in Ameliasburgh was arrested and charged with:
- Criminal Code of Canada – overcome resistance by administering or attempting to administer a drug
- Criminal Code of Canada – administer noxious thing with intent – endanger life or cause bodily harm
- Controlled Drugs and Substance Act – traffic in schedule IV substance
