The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against a Belleville Police officer.
The SIU was called in to investigate following an incident last fall, where a 33-year-old cyclist collided with a pickup truck.
According to the SIU report, on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at approximately 12:50 p.m., BPS officers were conducting a foot patrol near the Moira River trail when they saw a man riding a bicycle.
One of the police officers recognized the man riding the bicycle as the complainant, who had outstanding warrants for his arrest.
The police officer called out to the complainant. The complainant rode his bicycle over a pedestrian bridge across the Moira River and collided with a pickup truck travelling southbound on Coleman Street.
The complainant was subsequently transported to a hospital and diagnosed with a fracture to his pelvis and right knee.
Loparco says he found there are no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence relating to this incident.
