The $213 million project to increase cellular service in eastern Ontario, the latest project of the Eastern Ontario Regional Network, is moving ahead.
It is a four-way deal, with the the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus providing $10 million and the province, federal government and telecommunications industry being asked to fund the rest.
In an interview Thursday, Network co-leader Jim Pine told Quinte News that EORN officials met recently with provincial government representatives and meetings continue at the staff level.
Pine says that although the federal government hasn’t committed to its share of the cost he is optimistic.
All eastern Ontario counties are on board, committing their share of the funding, along with seven of 10 separated municipalities, excepting Peterborough, Brockville and Pembroke.
He says improved service makes sense for business and safety since there are gaps of 100 kilometres where there is no service.
Pine expects construction of the expanded service will begin in 2019 or 2020.
