6:30 THURSDAY UPDATE: Firefighters return to douse hot spots in swamp.
It was hot tough slogging for over 30 firefighters as they fought a wind-whipped swamp fire in the largest wetland area in southeastern Ontario late Wednesday afternoon and into the evening.
Calls came in for a large smoky fire in the 10,000 acre Murray Marsh south of Campbellford just before 5:00 p.m.
Quinte West Fire Chief John Whalen says North Murray hall responded first and four additional halls along with firefighters from Brighton were also called in.
It took about four hours to put the fire out. Chief Whalen says it appears the big fire was started in an abandoned vehicle found at the scene.
The OPP is investigating the cause as a criminal matter. No one was injured but EMS paramedics were on scene standing by.
