A motion to make some changes to Quinte West’s public smoking by-law has been deferred.
The proposed by-law would see vaping, e-cigarettes and marijuana covered under the same rules as tobacco, where the products could not be used within nine metres of the entrance to city facilities.
One vaping advocate told council that it wasn’t fair to group vaping in with tobacco, since the products are different and in his eyes, vaping is a proven alternative for people looking to quit smoking cigarettes.
Council decided that since the province still has some work to do in determining how to handle the issue, they would defer the motion for now and let the next council deal with it.
