The man accused of the second degree murder of Belleville native Elizabeth Nugent has been found guilty.
According to InsideHalton.com 45-year-old Malcolm Copeland of Burlington was found guilty by a 12-person jury Wednesday after about five hours of deliberation in a Milton courtroom.
Copeland showed little emotion upon hearing the verdict.
Nugent’s bloody body was found in her Burlington apartment in late October of 2014.
A box cutter was seized at the apartment and there had been a 4-hour standoff with police before Copeland was arrested.
Copeland’s lawyer had claimed he killed her in self defence.
Copeland and the 32-year-old Nugent had had an on again off again relationship and he had been living with her.
The court heard she intended to break off the relationship.
He will be sentenced August 13.
