Significant structural issues on a bridge near Tweed have caused municipal officials to close the structure immediately.
A study of the Hawkins Bay Bridge shows deterioration of the steel stringers and wooden deck and the bridge will need major rehabilitation work over the next one-to-five years.
The municipality says residents in the area have been provided with alternate routes to access their properties and that council is consulting engineers to see what options they have to resolve the issue.
The town says it owns and maintains 52 bridges and culverts, many of which are in need of repairs or replacements, at costs that far exceed the annual operating budget.
