Belleville’s Moira Secondary will be renamed Eastside Secondary School.
For a second time, the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board has renamed the high school.
The first time was Meyers Creek Secondary, however due to a connection between John Meyers and slaves, the name was removed.
Following consultation, the Operations and Finance Committee determined Eastside Secondary, or Eastside High will be on the front of the consolidated school in September.
In total, almost 3,200 name suggestions were received, by 1,400 plus individuals.
Some people submitted multiple names.
Seventy-eight percent (almost 2,500) of the submissions were for the school to be kept the same name, Moira Secondary.
Second out of all the suggestions was Moira/Quinte Secondary School at 110 suggestions or 3.4 percent.
Names of existing or former school names within the HPEDSB were removed.
The rationale for this name is that the school is geographically located on the east side of Belleville.
In addition, staff and students have been working through the consolidation process for several months.
The committee felt that the selection of the school colours of purple, grey and black, and the Raven as the mascot, fit appropriately with the Eastside Secondary School name.
