A 424 Squadron Griffon Helicopter was used to rescue two sailors in distress, off Presqu’ile Point on Lake Ontario in Brighton yesterday.
The sailors had called 911 saying they were taking on water and trying to make it to shore and the Search and Rescue technicians were dispatched by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, along with the Candian Coast Guard Auxiliary and Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Cape Mercy.
The CCGA staff got there first and were joined shortly after by the chopper, which dropped off two SAR-techs in high wind and low ceiling conditions.
The SAR-tech’s swam to the 27-foot sailing vessel and were able to stabilize it with an emergency pump.
The CCGA crew was able to then tow the sailboat to safety at a local marina.
